Well, I know it's been a long time! I guess you could say we've been having a Blue Christmas and I haven't really been that inspired to write. Our past 6 days have been busy with waiting for plumbers and other Frenchmen to "fix" this or deliver that... taking their sweet ass time and charging us hundreds of Euros for a job (not at all) well done. It has been less than pleasant. We didn't get to go Christmas shopping or decorate the house because of it. No fun - but we will get over it!
Cindy found a restaurant called Le Rotonde for our Christmas Eve dinner though and it was amazing! Check this out http://www.rotondemontparnasse.com/ By the way, our vegetarian days are over. I had veal, of all things - and it was to die for! We had a nice eve - but then came home to find our stackable dryer had crashed to the ground and was broken. We were bummed, but in the end, Cindy fixed it! Who knew she was such a good handy-man?
One thing that cheers us up... finding simple groceries that we recognize. Today we found some Hellman's Mayo, Pop Secret, Skippy, Pringles and (sorry Jano) Campbell's Soups. We were so excited! It's funny how the little things (that you might not even eat normally) can make you feel at home! We have really noticed how we tend to take things for granted at home. Things are easy in the US. First of all, the air in TX and in TN is a lot warmer! Customer Service is a way of life for us, in the states. English is a beautiful language. And having a Wal-Mart or Target on every corner is the most luxurious thing I can even imagine right now! When you run out to the corner store to get a light bulb or to Target for a curtain rod - and you drive there in your own car, and park in the free parking lot, and drive through the Starbucks window on the way home - think of us - and then thank the Lord in Heaven that you are in the good ole US of A :-)
So to what inspired me to write tonight: Onyx. She is such a goof ball! This evening, she decided to do a back flip onto our coffee table. It was really scary - and then funny. (She thought that the coffee table was the ottoman). She jumped up, flipped onto her back and landed on our dishes that were on the table. She only broke one bowl - but scared the crap out of us and out of herself! LOL - What a monkey!
So that sums it up for now. We really miss you all and can't wait to hear from you!
Au revoir,
Les Girls

Immigration Woes
It's funny (as an American) to think of yourself as an immigrant. It's like I didn't understand it before. We are now in the category of "those foreigners." Don't you find it odd? It's a totally new perspective.
You know what really comes in handy for living abroad? Google Translator (http://www.traslate.goole.com/) That thing is freaking awesome! I have used it for tech support on Cindy's phone and used it just a moment ago to prepare for the plumber, who should arrive in about an hour! You should try it!
Anyway, today I had to get my physical as part of my immigration process. It was a strange thing. We got up at 6am to go way across town to this thing called the ANAEM (the national agency for welcoming foreigners and migrants). Once we got there, I was hearded through all of these stations with tons of other people. I had to get weighed and measured, pricked and x-rayed and then I had a conversation with the doctor in my bra and pants. How wierd is that? No gown, just bra. LOL - Good thing my medical history has made me a little less modest than most people are! So - they gave me a paper that says I'm healthy and now I have to apply for my carte de séjour pretty soon - who knows what I will have to do for that. (It's a greencard by the way)!
Did you ever wonder how they might tow a car in a really busy / compact ara? Well let me tell you about towing cars in France. Basically - they pick the sucker up with straps. I'm not kidding you. They have a crane and they just lift it onto the truck bed. It was one of the craziest things I ever saw. I thought for sure they would drop it right on it's hood! We got to see this spectacle yesterday while we were enjoying an amazing (2.5 hour) lunch. I'm glad that wasn't my car - what a mess! I don't really know what you do to claim it either - it's not like they leave a note. Funniest part - right after they picked it up, another car took its spot!

Well - that's it for now. I know you're anxious to see the flat - believe me - we are anxious to get it in some kind of order so that we can show it! I will do it as soon as I can!

Lorraine

La Pharmacie
We had some sad news today. We found out that one of our friends from church passed away suddenly today. His body was found by another church member after he didn't answer the phone for a couple of days. It's really awful. Please keep the family of Roger Allen Baker in your thoughts and prayers for us. His family depended on him a lot and they will need God with them during this awful time.
Well Cyn broke down and went to a pharmacy today - THANK GOD! She got some sort of cold medicine (we think) and some orange juice. Thanks for all of your well-wishes! I hope this stuff works! Funny thing about France - there is always an opportunity to participate in "us versus them" sorts of exchanges. Cindy got to experience this first hand as she and an older man were in line together at the Pharmacie while the worker was trying to shut down the line. They decided to revolt and stay in the line anyway. They united against "the man" without words - just smiles, laughs and body language. French people are not as rude as you think - you just have to understand their point of reference :-)
The good news for today is that she was also able to get the electronics / appliances ordered and they should arrive (along with our IKEA order and our shipment from Tennessee) on Friday! So - it looks like we will be able to vacate the hotel - before we get the boot! Praise God! Just incase you didn't know - in Paris, you normally get a kitchen without anything in it. Literally – it’s a square with electrical outlets and water pipes. Our kitchen had cabinets (we were lucky) so she only had to buy a stove, fridge, dishwasher and microwave! Can you believe that -ish? :)
Funny thing - she was able to strategically plan this shopping expedition while I was working. She really got back at me for our Tennessee TV (12 inches) by buying a 42 inch flat screen - Lee you would really be proud. She also managed to get a British satellite - so if we are allowed to set it up at our apartment then we will have some English TV. LOL.
On another note, I had a phone call today on my Nashville work number. It looks like you can call us there without having to pay international rates. Just an FYI. If you need the number, shoot me an email. We would love to see you emails - feel free to write to either one of us.
Love you
Lola

Almost Home
Today was better than yesterday - I need that to continue to be the case! We got up early (again) today in order to get our furniture delivered from the other couple's house to our new apartment. The apartment is really nice and I can't wait for you to see it! It has hardwood floors throughout most of the flat. It has a big kitchen (by European standards) a guest room, a master, a "water closet" (which means the room with the commode), the rest of what should be in a bathroom in the other room, and a big living room. All of the windows have ledges outside of them so that we can have little flower boxes on the outside. We are both excited about that! Some of you know that the kitchen is yellow with blue tiles as a back splash. It reminds me of the Olive Garden! LOL - We will post some pictures as soon as we take them!
Lee and Vonn thanks for calling today! It was really awesome to talk to you. Unfortunately, we signed out of skype and can't remember Cyn's password. I will have to figure that out to get us signed back on - so have patience and don't be surprised if we have to give you a new name to call if we can't figure it out!
By the way, we are now official masters of the metro - we went to a new place today and it was totally smooth. We both have Navigo passes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navigo_pass) that allow us to ride as much as we want for a monthly fee. It's great because it makes riding much easier and allow us to talk less to mean French "customer service" people :-)
One last thing, keep us in your prayers. We are both getting a little sick - probably due to the cold & wet weather and all of the walking that we have to do in it! Hopefully it will pass if we get some good early rest tonight!
Okay - the end for today. Love you!

The craziest week ever
Hey there -
We have had the craziest week ever - sorry it's been so long since we posted but it has really been the week from hell! The last time I posted we were figuring out the metro and that seems like ages ago!
I started my job the Monday after we arrived. It is really a strange change. We don't have offices here - it's a very open space and like everything else here - a very small personal space. My keyboard is actually too big for my desk! I also don't have a docking station or a monitor - so I'm getting adjusted to the very un-ergonomic situation that I have to face. The work days are SUPER long - so remember all that vacation I was bragging about before I left? Who cares - when you work from 7:30 - 8pm every week day! I already need a vacation!
On Wednesday my students for the program that I am in charge of arrived. I have been at a hotel in a little town called Bougival every day since Wednesday (including today). I catch a cab every morning and it ranges from 28 - 51 euro each way, depending on the driver! My boss has been very supportive. I was supposed to be staying in that town for the last week, but he has allowed me to make alternative arrangements so as not to leave Cindy alone for her first week! But - starting on Monday, I will go ahead and stay in that town while Cyn and the dogs are here in the city centre.
As far as our home situation, we found an expatriate couple who are moving out of Paris (to Tennessee coincidentally) and we are purchasing most of their appliances and some of their furniture. We went to IKEA to pick up the rest. We also went to this store called DARTY to pick up the missing appliances. That was an awful experience though. The store refused our "American" credit cards and we were sent away with nothing to show for it! We have to try again after we get our French cards from the bank (Thursday). We can't wait to get out of this tiny hotel and into our apartment. It's much bigger and the dogs will have more grass. The dogs by the way are officially French now (if you read earlier I am sure you can figure out what I mean by that :-)
So - again we miss you. We are both terribly home sick and also seem to be catching colds which makes you miss home even more! Lee and Jano - I got your messages that you called on Skype. Try to call on Cindys because my work computer is really solidly shut down when I can finally get away from work!
Hope to hear from you soon!

Our first couple of days in Paree
Well, the travelling was a lot easier than I anticipated - THANK GOD! So, we got to the airport about 5 hours early. Sounds crazy, I know but we needed all of that time. We were able to walk the dogs and feed them before we checked them in. The checking in wasn't that painful (except for the price - 550 per dog - yikes). But I would still do that rather than getting a service to do it for us. It's about 5 times as much and you don't have the peace of mind of knowing they are really taken care of before you check them and after you land. You should have seen O'luv at the security check point! She was so stressed out - shaking from head to toe with her tongue sticking out. I have NEVER seen her THAT ku-koo before. It was really sad. Onyx was a champ on the front end, but they changed roles when we got to Charles de Gaulle. More about that in a minute!
So we finally get on the plane and into our seats. We were supposed to get a confirmation note off of the dogs kennel letting us know that they were loaded but no one brought it to us. So - what could we do except delay the flight for the rest of the folks until they gave us some assurances!!!! We really did. We told the flight attendant that we couldn't leave until we got the paper and she wasn't happy with us. Finally, the captain came to speak to us and told us he was positive that our dogs were definitely on the plane - he checked himself! So, thanks Captain James Dean - they really were there! :-) And were they ever there! When we got to the special luggage area we could hear Onyx giving them hell in the back. She was HOT! She barked and cried all the way to our temporary apartment! What a brat! O'luv had her halo on - and was perfect the whole time. Oh - and French Customs? Whatever - no one ever stopped us - they didn't even look at the dogs and asked for nothing! I hope they weren't supposed to give us some verification that we will have to go back and get someday!
So - Cindy arranged for us to have a private van pick up. The guy was holding a little sign with our name on it. That was awesome! He helped us load them and brought us here to our humble abode. The place where we are staying is pretty cool. It's very close to Victor Hugo and Trocadero - we can walk to the Eiffel Tower and the Arc pretty easily. It's like a little efficiency apartment with a mini kitchen. Last night Cyn made our first romantic dinner in our little place! You should have seen us in the grocery store - it was funny. We circled it about 4 times before we even got the nerve to pick up a basket. It's funny how everything seems so scary. It really takes two of us together to be able to do anything. I think this adventure is really going to make us the strongest couple ever!
Today was a little bit crazier. We walked back and forth a couple of times down the same road because we couldn't find the dang metro. What we did find though was much better - STARBUCKS :-) The coffee in our hotel was SO STRONG that neither of us could really drink it - we were really happy to find that little piece of home. So we came back to the hotel and finally asked for directions and were able to find the metro. I think we just didn't have our wits about us from the lack of caffeine! On the way to the metro, we did find my favorite view of the Eiffel Tower - so that was a really awesome.
So, finally in the metro, we bought the wrong tickets! We were trying to get to the town of Rueil, where my office is located. So we made it there okay, but because we had the wrong tickets, we couldn't exit the station! Cindy had to actually jump over the turnstiles to exit! So yes - we are here for less than 24 hours and already break the law! So she found a ticket that someone else had used and gave it to me and it actually worked. Thank God because you know my fat ass couldn't jump anything over 3 inches off the ground! So we finally got out and found our way to my office. So our dry run was successfully completed and I should be able to find my way tomorrow.
Our plan was to go to our apartment after the trip to the office, but that part did not work out. We hadn't eaten yet for the day and we were so hungry we didn't have the energy to try to navigate the system any further. So - Cindy will finally see the apartment tomorrow. I am hoping she will take some pictures so that you can see what it's like.
One last funny thing - the dogs have jet lag. They are so tired during the day and wide awake at night. It doesn't help that there are tons of street noises that you can hear from our apartment, but it's really odd to think that they get affected the same way (considering that most of their entire day consists of sleeping anyway).
Well - that's it for now. Thanks for calling us tonight Nicole - it was really awesome to hear from home. Also please everyone, don't forget to download Skype - you can call us for free from your computer. www.skype.com - Once you have it loaded, send us your names so we can add you to our phone book.

Dans Le Aeroport
No matter who you are travelling with - or how much you have going on, it's a really lonely feeling to take a shuttle to an airport. It just doesn't seem natural.
I told Jano - I would give ANYTHING to have some family with me right now. As you can tell, I'm feeling a little sad today. Don't get me wrong, God has blessed us - over and over and of course, I am really excited about this new phase of our life. We're living in Paris for the love of the country! I'm just sad that we wont be a quick flight away. We wont have the amazing neighbors that we had in the Boro. We won't be able to run up to the lake and eat Susie and Sonia's home cookin'. We won't get to drop in on HTCC and hear the choir sing on Sunday. There is a lot to miss.
Everyone has heard us say "come visit us while we are there" or "you have to come - you won't have to pay for a hotel." This is my official, in writing offer to all of our family and friends. We will need you. We miss you already. Please come and see us ANYTIME! Paris is an amazing place and we want to share it with you!
I'll write more when I can - we love you!

Our last night
Our last night is turning out to be very unceremonious. Like the last 14 days, it's full of chores. We have been busy packing (again) doing laundry and booking shuttles to and from the airports.
So, about the car.... We went to clean Pearl today to get her ready for Carmax - and SHE FREAKING DIED at a gas station! It's funny (now) but I was really not happy. Two angels (old guys) decided to help us to restore her back to her fully operational state. They told me that I had to drive her around to recharge the battery, so I drove around a movie parking lot just wondering how fast am I supposed to be going and for how long??? I finally decided that I had enough (carsick) and I drove straight to a Nissan dealership. I figured with today's economy, they wouldn't want to have a broke down pathfinder in the front of their lot. Luckily she started right up and we will be ready to sell her in the morning. After that, we get the hotel shuttle to pick us up and bring us back to the hotel, have a late check out and then have the shuttle to the airport pick us up and take us there.
I am sure it is going to be a mess - so pray for us. You know, I can usually get out of carrying heavy stuff but with 4 bags, two backpacks, two dogs and two kennels - I don't think I will be so lucky this time. Oh well :( Wish me luck!

Getting Ready
Hi everyone,
We wanted to start a little blog to let you know what we are up to and how we are doing along our adventure. We are in Atlanta and getting ready for our final list of to-do's before we leave the good ole USA. O'luv and Onyx got acquainted with their kennels on our drive from Nashville to Georgia. It was pretty funny to see our car, I'm quite sure it was some kind of safety violation. We have 4 suitcases and two really bulky kennels along with the 4 of us. If you can believe it, O'luv and Onyx both rode inside their crates for the long haul across TN! We still aren't sure how we are going to sell Pearl (the pathfinder) and get ourselves to the airport - and we don't even want to think about how we are going to get the girls and all our stuff to our apartment in Paris without hiring a small caravan!
Onyx was a big ole brat today. They bark at every little noise in this hotel - and there are lots of them. I was on a conference call with my new team that was supposed to last for one hour but ended 50 minutes after that! Onyx had enough and decided that I needed to hang up - so she barked at the top of her lungs for the last 20 minutes. Of course, Cyn had run out to the store right before then so I just had to suck it up and pretend it wasn't happening! A friend of mine who was on the call wrote on my facebook page asking about it - so there isn't any chance that they didn't notice! Oh well!
We spent most of the day relaxing today. I wanted to feel like I was just at home and it was a normal day. I don't think we are going to have any days like that for a while. There will be so much to do to get us settled into our new life...
I am really sad that we aren't in Texas with the family for these last few days (especially because we missed Thanksgiving and wont' be there for Christmas), but we had to make it easy on the dogs because that makes it a little easier on us. Just know that you are in our thoughts and keep us and the doggles in your prayers.
So, I guess that's all for today. Please write to us or give us a call - we can't wait to hear from you!
